Dr David Bell is retired from his post as Consultant Psychiatrist and the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust in 2021. He served as Governor representing the clinical staff. During that time he raised very serious concerns about the Tavistock Gender Service for children (GIDS) which were subsequently bought to the attention of the general public (Channel 4 News watch here). This became part of a groundswell of opinion leading to the NHS review of treatment for children suffering from distress in relation to their gender identify and the subsequent decision to close GIDS. David will talk about social transition from a clinical perspective, with reference to the
Cass interim review and proposed changes to children and young people’s gender services.

Stephanie Davies-Arai BEM for Services to Children
Author, children’s educational campaigner and founder of Transgender Trend. Transgender Trend calls for evidence-based healthcare for children and young people suffering gender dysphoria and for factual, science-based teaching in schools. Established in 2015, Transgender Trend has led the way in advocating for the rights of children to reject gender stereotypes and be who they really are without discrimination, labelling or medical interventions to ‘fix’ them. Transgender Trend believes that children with gender dysphoria deserve evidence-based treatment and have a right to the same duty of care as any other child. Stephanie will talk about the new schools guidance on social transitioning: what there is to welcome about it and how it could be improved.

Dr Jane Martin is a retired psychiatrist and medical psychotherapist, who spent the
majority of her years as an NHS consultant working in forensic services. Prior to training in medicine she qualified as a teacher, and worked in both secondary school and further education colleges. Jane has written about the effects of gender identity theory on children.
In the webinar Jane will talk about social transition and the safeguarding and child welfare issues it raises, from her perspective as a clinician, grand-mother and former teacher.
